Founder of the European Union Democracy Observatory (EUDO) at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the EUI. Professor of Political Science and holder of the Swiss Chair of Federalism and Democracy at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy.
He completed his PhD in Political Science (with distinction) at the University of Geneva (Switzerland). Before coming to the EUI in 2005, he was Deputy Director of the Centre for Research and Documentation on Direct Democracy (C2D) at the School of Law of the University of Geneva (1999-2005).

Journalist, television newsreader and Deputy Director of RTP. With a degree in sociology, he began his professional career in 1989 at Rádio Comercial and worked for Antena 1 and TSF, before moving to television two years later. He became an anchor at RTP and presented various news programmes. He moved to SIC between 2000 and 2001 before returning to RTP, where he became Deputy Director of Information and Deputy Director of RTPN. He spent half a year heading up information for the new Channel 11 before once more returning to RTP.

He holds a PhD in sociology, specialising in the sociology of education, culture and communication, from ISCTE-IUL, Portugal (2006). He is currently Postgraduate Researcher and Lecturer at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon. He is also Coordinator of the LIFE research group – Life Paths, Inequalities and Solidarities, and Vice-Coordinator of the Permanent Youth Observatory. As well as publishing regularly in national and international scientific journals on youth issues, he is the author/editor of books such as Millennial Generation? A Social and Political Portrait (2017), Researching Young People: Methodological Paths and Challenges (2017) and Youth(s) From the Local to the National – What Intervention? (2019). His most recent research has focused on the conditions enabling the emergence of «new dream professions» within the aspirational and professional integration patterns of younger generations; on how generational categories have gained prominence as symbolic devices for identifying and enunciating social inequalities in the post-crisis conjuncture; and on new and old forms of action and political production by/for and with young people.

An economist, he teaches at the Catholic University of Portugal School of Economics and Management (Porto). He completed his PhD and Master's degree in Economics at the University of York (UK). His main areas of research are Microeconomics, Auction Theory, Regulation and Competition and it is in these areas that he teaches several undergraduate and Master’s degree courses. He has carried out consultancy work for public and private entities in Portugal and abroad, on a number of topics related to Regulation and Competition in the telecommunications, financial services and health sectors (among others).

Researcher Coordinator at the University of Lisbon Institute of Social Sciences. He got a PhD in Political Science from Ohio State University in 2003. His research interests include public opinion, elections and the relationship between justice and politics. His work has appeared in academic journals such as the "American Journal of Political Science", "Comparative Political Studies", the "European Journal of Political Research", "Political Research Quarterly", "West European Politics" and "Experimental Economics", to name but a few.
