Portugal and the US, A personal puzzle of Portuguese-American relations

Nº161 SEPTEMBER 2026

The Azores lie in the Atlantic between Portugal and the US, connected to both countries not only by the geopolitical importance of Lajes Air Base, but also by the Azorean ancestry of most Portuguese Americans. However, there are countless other points of connection between the two nations — this book explores them.

Although Portugal was one of the first countries to recognise US independence, the ties between the two countries are much deeper — Portuguese and American navigators were already visiting one another's shores in the sixteenth century. Did you know, for example, that Abbé Correia da Serra, the Portuguese scientist and ambassador, was a regular guest at Thomas Jefferson's house, where Jefferson called him 'our Socrates'?

This book contextualises the transatlantic relationship and considers the challenging circumstances currently facing the two allies, both founding members of NATO.
