Born in 1942, got is PhD in Mechanical Engineering from IST in 1973. He was among other duties, General Director of Higher Education between 1976 and 1980 World Bank Project of the General Coordinator in Education between 1980 and 1985; President of the National Council of Education 1992-1995; Minister of Education 1995 to 1999; Administrator of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation between 2000 and 2015. He is currently the President of the General Council of the University of Aveiro since 2015. he is also de member of other several institutions. He is the author of several publications in the field of engineering and in the areas of Education and Development Aid. He was awarded the orders of : Military Sant 'Iago of the Sword of Merit and Public Instruction.

Researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences (ICS-UL) and Professor at ISCTE-IUL. In 2016, she received the award for best doctoral thesis from the Portuguese Political Science Association (2014-2016) for her research Explaining Party System Institutionalisation in Africa: From a Broad Comparison to a Focus on Mozambique and Zambia. Her research interests include political parties and party systems, democratisation, institutions and political attitudes in new democracies, with a focus on Africa. Her articles have been published in journals such as Parliamentary Affairs, Electoral Studies, Acta Politica, South European Society and Politics, Journal of Asian and African Studies, Análise Social; and she has written book chapters for publishers such as Imprensa de Ciências Sociais, Almedina and Routledge.

A social anthropologist, he earned his doctorate at Harvard and currently teaches at Boston University. He is president of the American Institute for Afghanistan Studies.
He is the author of various books, including «The Central Asian Arabs of Afghanistan» (1981), «The Perilous Frontier: Nomadic Empires and China» (1989) and «Afghanistan: An Atlas of Indigenous Domestic Architecture» (1991). In 2006, he received a Guggenheim fellowship, which led to the publication of «Afghanistan: A Cultural and Political History» (2010), a book that received an exceptional title award from the American Library Association in 2011.

He works as a lecturer at the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL) and as a researcher at the Centre for International Studies (CEI). He specialises in democracy, social movements and civil society.
He co-directs the «Varieties of Democracy in Southern Europe» project, which studies the causes and consequences of democratisation in Southern Europe from 1960 to the present. He also coordinates the Portuguese team on the «Disobedient Democracy» project, which analyses the causes and patterns of protest in the Southwest and Southeast of Europe.
For 20 years, he taught at the Nova University Lisbon, where he also headed the Political Studies department and served on the Board of the Portuguese Institute of International Relations (IPRI).
He has dozens of publications in indexed journals and has written books such as «A Sociedade Civil», published by Fundação Francisco Manuel dos Santos.

He has worked as a professor in the Department of Philosophy at the Federal University of Ouro Preto, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil since 2007. He is the director of the electronic magazine «Criticism on the Net» and has written a number of books, including «Philosophy Live», «Naturalised Essentialism», «All the Dreams of the World and Other Essays», «Elementary Logic: Reasoning, Language and Reality» and «The Existence of God: The Essential». He also writes philosophy books for secondary education.
He is a founding member of the Centre for the Teaching of Philosophy at the Portuguese Society of Philosophy.
He has a PhD in Philosophy from the Department of Philosophy at the University of Lisbon School of Arts and Humanities, he has a Master’s degree in Philosophy of Language and Consciousness from the same university and he is a PhD student of Philosophy at King’s College London, UK – where he taught Logic and Ethics.

He is Professor of History at Yale University and a permanent member of the Institute of Human Sciences in Vienna.
He has published countless books translated into over 40 languages, including the books «Bloodlands – Europe between Hitler and Stalin», «On Tyranny: 20 Lessons from the 20th Century», «The Road to Unfreedom: Russia, Europe, America» and «Our Sickness: Lessons in Liberty from a Hospital Diary», published in Portugal.
He has received various awards, including the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought, the Leipzig Book Prize, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Literature Prize, the Dutch Auschwitz Committee Prize and the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Medal.
His work has inspired paintings, posters, sculptures, plays, films, an opera, as well as punk rock and rap songs.

He is a full professor, emeritus, at Nova University Lisbon. He was a member of the Portuguese parliament, Minister of Education in the 15th Constitutional Government (2002-2004) and President of the National Council of Education (2013-2017).
He has a PhD in Sociology from Nova University Lisbon, a postgraduate degree in Economic History and a Bachelor's degree in Economics.
He received the Gulbenkian Science Award 1987 (Social and Human Sciences) for his work «The Formation of the National Economic Area. Portugal 1810-1913» and the Literary Grémio Award 2017 for the publication of his work «Fontismo. Liberalism in an Illiberal Society» (LeYa). He recently published «Essays on the Day After» (Almedina).
He was decorated by the Presidency of the Republic with the Grand Cross of the Order of Prince Henry and the Grand Cross of the Order of Public Instruction.

He has a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from the Nova School of Social Sciences and Humanities in 1994. He completed her Master’s degree in Anthropology: Heritage and Identities at ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon in 1999, before defending his PhD in Culture and Social Anthropology at the Nova School of Social and Human Sciences in 2007. In 2008, he joined the Research Centre for Economic and Organisational Sociology at the University of Lisbon (ISEG-ULisboa), where he conducted his postdoctoral research focusing on sociological studies of finance and organisational ethnography. His research areas also include social studies of finance and the new configurations of policing and security.

PhD candidate in Political Science at the European University Institute in Florence. With a background in International Relations, he completed his Master’s degree in Political Science at the University of Aveiro, focusing on issues of electoral competition and the success of new parties.

Assistant professor (since 2016) and coordinator of Constitutional Law at the Porto Catholic University of Lisbon School of Law. She is also the executive coordinator of the Master’s degree courses in Law (2022), scientific coordinator of the Master’s degree courses in Constitutionalism, Democracy and Human Rights and co-coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Degree in Human Rights.
She is a member of the Coordination Council of the «Academic Network on The European Social Charter and Social Rights» and co-editor of the series «Constitutionalism in Latin America and the Caribbean» (Hart Publishing).
She is a member of the International Society of Public Law and the International Association of Electoral Law.
