British writer and historian. He studied Military History and served as an officer before leaving the army to write after five years.
He has published four novels and thirteen non-fiction books. His work is published in 34 foreign languages and has sold over eight and a half million copies. He is a member of the Royal Society of Literature and the Royal Historical Society.
He was a professor at the University of Cambridge, Birkbeck College and the University of Kent. In 2014, he won the Pritzker Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing, presented by the Military Museum and Pritzker Library and the Norton Medlicott Medal for Service to History in 2016. In 2017, he was knighted on the New Year’s Honour List.

João Gaio e Silva is FFMS' Research and Science Communication Manager in the field of Institutions
He is a PhD student in Political Science at the the Nova School of Social Sciences and Humanities, and he holds a master’s degree in Political Science and International Relations from the same institution. He has also completed a postgraduate course in Social Research Methods at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon.
His academic and research work has focused on the areas of democracy, populism and political representation, and he is the author of several published articles and papers.

He holds a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Political Science and wrote a chapter in the book "Reatar Relações", published in 2012. In 2016, he was awarded the prize for best paper presented at the 8th Congress of the Portuguese Political Science Association.
