He is a researcher at the Centre for Business and Economics Research (CeBER) and a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labour (IZA). His research focuses on employment, wages, productivity, company dynamics, trade unions and workers' committees. His studies, co-authored with a number of national and international researchers, cover the Portuguese and European realities, with an emphasis on analysing the German labour market.

He is a consultant researcher at the Bank of Portugal's Economic Research Department and a visiting professor at the Nova School of Business and Economics. He is also an external researcher at the Essex Centre for Financial Econometrics, University of Essex, and the Clive Granger Centre for Time Series Analysis, University of Nottingham, both in the United Kingdom.
He has carried out research in the fields of time series, financial econometrics, macroeconometrics and applied macroeconomics. His research has been published in international scientific journals including the "Review of Economics and Statistics", the "Journal of Econometrics", "Econometric Theory", "Econometrics Reviews", the "Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics".
