Castro Laboreiro, between summer and winter homes
No. 67 AUGUST 2022
However poor they were, all the families in the parish of Castro Laboreiro, in Melgaço had two homes. Twice a year, all the people, their animals and belongings moved house, according to the weather in the Peneda mountain range and the religious calendar.
They went down to their winter homes (villages in sheltered valleys) for Christmas and climbed back up to their summer homes (small sunny villages on high ground) for Easter.
This book is dedicated to these nomadic practices that do still exist but are almost extinct due to depopulation and climate change. A unique way of life that will soon be mere historical narrative, becoming the stuff of legend.
