Bankers, Portraits with a value date

Nº97 MAY 2026

«I’m going to the bank!» There was a time when saying that meant dressing up in your Sunday best, especially if you were going to see the bank manager, a venerable local figure. But what has happened to the man in a suit and tie, the epitome of rectitude and reliability, who guarded peoples life savings?

This books tells the story of Portuguese bankers and how the financial sector has changed. From the trade union movement and the «economic miracle» of the 1970s and 1980s to the current scenario where labour solidarity has eroded, the banking sector is being automated and downsized, and redundancies and employee burnout abound. Through statements from different generations of bankers and ex-bankers, it documents the human cost of the increasing modernisation of a sector that went from being a proximity service to the harsh reality of algorithms and commercial targets.
