Peneda-Gerês National Park, Portugal
Nº93 FEBRUARY 2026
It all began in 1888, when King Luís I of Portugal decided to go out hunting mountain goats, but without much success. This led to the set-up of Mata Nacional, the predecessor to the current Peneda-Gerês National Park. It is thanks to conservation initiatives like these that we can still, like the king himself, admire the scenery, the flora and fauna and the age-old traces of human settlement on this land, with an area of around 69,000 hectares, atop granite massifs dating from around 320 to 290 million years ago.
This books reveals Peneda-Gerês on a journey that travels through the history, ecology and cultural of this unique Portuguese national park. More than a portrait, it is an appeal for the preservation of the wealth and diversity of this heritage that is at risk of losing its cultural and environmental identity.
