The Religion of Books, Second-Hand Bookshops, Bookshops and Book Sellers
No. 66 AUGUST 2022
Much of the images associated with bookshops, booksellers and books are as varied as what can be found within them. We do of course have the initial stage, the somewhat apocalyptic scenario and the role of the bookseller as a guardian of forgotten culture and gems. However, despite this rhetoric of resistance, there are exciting recent phenomena, such as internet sales and the villages of booksellers, and some bookshops that are still alive and kicking.
This is a book about the history and life of booksellers and bookshops, which will certainly include some fantastic anecdotes, but that is guided by an appearance of normality. It talks about the diversity of what is currently on offer, of book lovers, libraries, auctions and independent bookshops. It speaks of hope, because as long as there are books, there will be many more of them than readers.
