The Water of Tears
No. 88 MAY 2025
In the 14th century, Saint Elizabeth of Portugal ordered a water pipe to be opened and now, in the 21st century, it's still there, known as the Pipe of Love. Just like the fountain that mourns the tears shed by her grandson, Pedro, for Inês de Castro, whose blood is said to still tarnish the stones in the lake. In Quinta das Lágrimas, Coimbra, the restoration of the woods and the gardens was based on the nostalgic beauty of its environment and studying the trees in texts and pictures from different periods in order to open up the garden as a stage for future inspiration.
This book portrays 20 years of work on this complex, iconic garden. It combines landscape architecture, botany, art history, technical considerations and personal passion. It’s a must-read for garden lovers, history buffs and anybody interested in the intersection between nature and culture.
