Television and Public Service

In just 50 years, television became the means of communication that is most present in the lives of people all over the world. It created its own language and succeeded through versatility, in modes of expression and genres. The changes in recent years threaten the historical model of free-to-air TV. The television paradigm itself tends to change, with channels and their output losing importance in the face of concrete content. In the new world of communication, news and entertainment, a national debate is urgently needed on the public TV service and how to achieve it: should it continue to be run by a company that costs exhausted taxpayers one million euros a day? This essay gives an overview of TV today, TV in Portugal and the route to be followed by the public service.
