Born in Lisbon in 1957, he has a PhD in Sociology from the University of Lisbon. He has a Bachelor’s degree in History (1980) and in Communication (2004). He has been a professor of Television Studies and Advertising Analysis at the Catholic University of Portugal since 2004. He has been a TV and media critic in the «Público» since 1996 and of advertising in the «Jornal de Negócios» since 2003. He has published works such as «Reading Television» (1998), «Reality Shows: Rites of Passage in the Performance Society» (2002), «The Television Tragedy» (2006) and «More Ads Under the Magnifying Glass» (2008). He has published articles in national and international academic journals and book chapters. He has been writing TV and radio programmes since the 1980s and teaching materials for the Ministry of Education, such as the CD-ROM «Let’s Read Images!» (2006).
