It is one of the words we use most, but life without «freedom», prison life, is something we know little or nothing about. However, the conditions in the Portuguese prison system – the overcrowding in jails, the bribery and illegal trafficking mechanism, to give only two examples – are a recurring theme in debates in Portugal.
From testimonies from former inmates, in contrast to the influence of magistrates, psychologists and prison governors and guards, this book revisits our idea of prison life, in the voice of those who, now free, know what life behind bars is like better than anybody else.
