Far from the Sea

No. 3 MAY 2014

Far from the Sea is a Journey along the National 2 Road. From Chaves to Faro, through inland Portugal, Paulo Moura travelled the longest road in the country, telling stories of places and people. This first series of reports was published in the Público newspaper in August 2007. Later, the journalist decided to go back, retracing footsteps and narratives, in search of what remained untold. What happened to the smugglers in Vila Verde da Raia? To the girl that loved too much, to the playboys of Tortosendo, to the crazy woman from Trevim, to the blacksmith couple who loved books, to Natalia, who slept in the prison cell of her husband's killer, or Joaquina, who for 20 years lived alone, with her daughter, Iria, in an abandoned village? Their destinies, not the road, marked the course of this journey.
