The Sounds and Silences of the Portuguese Sound Landscape
No. 44 MAY 2014
How does Portugal sound? What does the Portuguese sound landscape tell us if we are willing to listen to it? Three dominant and problematic elements of the Portuguese soundscape, noise, silence and music, are analysed here. A quick historical perspective is presented and the contribution of each of these elements to the definition of the current Portuguese soundscape is outlined. Several cases, observed in Portugal, of a harmonious relationship with the sound environment are also described. The aim of this is to produce a brief outline of the Portuguese soundscape and draw attention to the importance of a subject that, when studied, can help us to understand the Portuguese identity better.
