The Portuguese Landscape
OCTOBER 2022
From Guadramil to Telheiro beach, from Barrancos to Corvo, what routes can we follow? What landscapes will we find? We looked at structural elements of Portuguese territory and also at the speed of the current transformations. We put a grid on the map of Portugal and attributed a photo to each one of the rectangles. There are 141 photos and as many texts, in a quest for an identity so often referred to, yet elusive, multiplied by many imaginaries, events and stories. The country is small, old and made up of a single nation. The idea of oneness is misleading, given that the mountain range in Gerês has one of the highest rates of rainfall in Europe and the left bank of the Guadiana is the driest. People tell us stories of the mixtures there have been, in the past and now, of those who arrive and those who emigrate. Geography and time leave a mosaic of records, sometimes accentuating inhabitants that have been lost in geological time and are at the root of ancient traditions, sometimes surprising us with news from the global world, far beyond Taprobana (Sri Lanka).
Book recommended by the National Reading Plan.
