The Railway in Portugal: Past, Present and Future

No. 101 JANUARY 2020

In the 19th century, trains meant progress. In the following century, they went into decline. And today? Did you know that Portugal is the only country in Europe where the weight of train transport in the movement of goods has increased most in the last decade and the main operator in the sector makes a profit? And that the recent trend is towards growth in long-haul passenger transport, especially between major cities and on suburban services? This essay analyses and explains the developments in Portuguese rail transport during more than a century and a half of existence. It defends the railway as a lever for economic development, fundamental to strategic sectors such as ports and better organisation of the territory, and the train as the only mode of transport already widely electrified, reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels and polluting emissions. Finally, it sets out priorities and guidelines to maximise the potential of the railway in the 21st century. Because Portuguese trains can and should go further and further.
