Watch the video

How can the Iberian Peninsula position itself as a true European energy hub? What still stands in the way of closer integration between the Peninsula and the rest of the European Union? Have Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the 2025 Iberian Peninsula blackout helped make integration a priority?

Gonzalo Escribano, senior fellow at the Elcano Royal Institute , and João Peças Lopes, director of INESC TEC — Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science, discussed the future of the Iberian energy market, exploring ways to strengthen Portugal and Spain's links with the wider European market.

Their discussion ranged from new infrastructure and interconnections to regulatory frameworks and political coordination, at a time when both internal and external pressures are testing the cohesion of the European project itself.

During the first panel of the Energy: A Future for Europe conference, the speakers also discussed the 2025 Iberian Peninsula blackout. The blackout exposed vulnerabilities while also underlining the importance of building more resilient, more interconnected energy systems better equipped to withstand unexpected shocks.
