Racism Today: Portugal in the European Context
No. 112 MAY 2021
Racism in Portugal? A positive answer to this question still and all too often provokes reactions of shock and outrage. In Portugal, however, the awareness that racism is incompatible with democracy is much more recent than in the rest of Europe. How is the legitimation of the sometimes hidden, sometimes open discrimination or racial violence among us explained? How do victims react and what strategies do they use? This essay proposes to combat the silence on these issues that has gone on for too long, the limited empirical research and lack of information and the mental inability to discuss them. It contributes important data and reflection to the pressing debate on the antiracism norm and the need for pro‑egalitarian public policies.
Book recommended by the National Reading Plan.
