Pedro Martins
Pedro S. Martins is Professor of Economics at Nova SBE in Carcavelos. He received his PhD in 2004 from the University of Warwick in the UK. His research area is labour economics, and he has published his studies in several international academic journals. He specialises in topics such as employment, wages, vocational training and education. He has authored several reports for international organisations, including the European Commission, the ILO, the IMF, the OECD and the World Bank. He was Secretary of State for Employment in the Portuguese Government (2011-2013).

He has been Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto since 2022, as well as an Associate Member of the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics, in the UK, after having worked in the Economic Studies Department of the Bank of Portugal and the Research Office of the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM). He completed a PhD and a research Master's Degree in Economics at the London School of Economics, and a Master's Degree and Bachelor's degree in Economics at the Nova School of Business and Economics, having taught at both institutions.
His primary focus is labour economics and applied microeconometrics, having more recently developed scientific activity in urban economics. His work seeks to understand how regulatory and public policy frameworks affect market balance and dynamics, from both a theoretical and empirical perspective. His scientific work has been published in journals such as the Journal of Econometrics and the British Journal of Industrial Relations.

James Heckman
Awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2000 for his work in microeconometrics, he is a Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Chicago and Director of its Center for the Economics of Human Development.
He has dedicated his career to understanding the origins of the main social and economic problems linked to inequality, social mobility, discrimination, training and regulating qualifications, as well as designing and evaluating alternative strategies for dealing with these challenges.

CEO of the Casais Engineering and Construction Group, an organisation he was maintained ties with throughout his career. He is a member of the Strategic Board of the Institute for Science and Innovation for Bio-sustainability, Business Ambassador for the city of Braga, a member of the Advisory Board of the Civil Engineering course at the University of Minho and a member of the Board of Directors of the Waste Recovery Centre (CVR) (subsidiary of the University of Minho).
He holds a Master's Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Minho, where he also attended the MBA Construction Specialization Course. He runs an Owner/President Management Programme at Harvard Business School.
