Ria Islands

No. 57 SEPTEMBER 2021

Located in the central part of the lagoon, the Ria de Aveiro islands were once bountiful places (with corn, beans, potatoes, watermelons, wine and even salt) and some of them even became inhabited.

With the first written records dating from 1407, the Aveiro islands are small patches of land barely mentioned in the history books and now left abandoned. All that remains are the memories of those who played a part in or witnessed these bygone times, when they were small summer resorts for some and, for others, fields where they had to work hard. This portrait does them justice, before their possible disappearance if the degradation and erosion they are subjected to are not halted in time.
