The New Medicine

This essay is dedicated to the extraordinary transformation of Medicine in recent decades. The science, practice and ethics of this New Medicine are the subject of particular attention, and there is an explanation of how it has absorbed scientific and technological progress and adapted to a new economic, social and even moral ecology, as well as to the demands of a society increasingly informed about the power of medicine. Looking at the future, a concern is expressed – ageing; uncertainty – the sustainability of health systems; a need – the medicine of «translation»; and a possible utopia – «personalised» medicine.
