Bio
João Lobo Antunes (1944-2016). He got his Bachelor’s degree in Medicine from the University of Lisbon in 1968. He got his PhD in Medicine from the University of Lisbon in 1983. He worked at the Department of Neurosurgery at the Institute of Neurology of New York, Columbia University from 1971 to 1984 and was appointed associate professor of Neurosurgery at that university. He was a Fulbright scholar and a fellow of the Matheson Foundation. He returned to Portugal in 1984 as professor of Neurosurgery at the Lisbon School of Medicine. He was president of the Scientific Council at F.M.L. (1996 2003-2004); President of the Institute of Molecular Medicine (2002); President of the Portuguese Society of Neurosurgery; Vice-President for Europe of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (2000); President of the European Society of Neurosurgery (1999-2003); President of the Society of Medical Sciences of Lisbon (1990); President of the Portuguese Academy of Medicine (2006); Visiting professor at the University of Beijing (2001); President of the Higher Council for Science, Technology and Innovation.
