He was born in Porto in 1943, but lived in Brussels where he pursued his studies. He got his Bachelor's degree and PhD in Physics from the Free University of Brussels, where he was a professor and director of the Biomedical Physics Laboratory. He took part in space missions and was President of the Life Sciences Commission at the European Space Agency.
