President of the European Commission during two terms (2004/2009 and 2009/2014) and prime minister of Portugal between 2002 and 2004.
He served has minister of Foreign Affairs, secretary of state for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and secretary of state for Internal Administration.
He is the president of the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD) and president of the Portuguese Diaspore Council.
He is a visiting professor at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa and at the European University Institute, in Florence.
