«What are the main concerns of Europeans today?», with Catherine de Vries

21 min
Watch episode

What are Europeans, and particularly Portuguese citizens, concerned about today? What are their priorities, and what changes do they hope to see in the European Union in the years ahead? How have these concerns and expectations evolved since Portugal and Spain joined the then European Economic Community in 1986? And what do citizens’ attitudes tell us about the state and future of the European project?

In this session, political scientist Catherine De Vries presents the key findings of the report «Portugal at 40: Public Perceptions of European Enlargement in Retrospect», published by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation on the day of the conference. The report draws on data from the eupinions project, a partnership between the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation and the Bertelsmann Foundation.

Through an interactive presentation, participants have the opportunity to compare their views, in real time, with those of the majority of citizens across several European Union Member States and, among other insights, discover how these attitudes have changed over the past decades.

The session continues with the debate on the priorities of Europeans, the challenges that concern them most and their expectations regarding the future of European integration, offering a comparative perspective on how different societies view the European Union’s path and its next steps.
