A specialist in Religious Sciences, he directs the Institute for the Study of Religion at the Catholic University, and is also a member of the Board of Directors and the Scientific Council of the School of Theology.
He has a PhD in Political Anthropology and a Master’s degree in Systematic Theology. He has dedicated his research to the analysis of Portuguese religious identities and institutions, new theories of religion and the study of religious aesthetic and cultural manifestations.
He is the coordinator of the Fundação Francisco Manuel dos Santos study «Religious Identities in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area».
He participates in the coordination of the network of researchers "Religion in Multiple Modernities" and has directed a number of projects.
He is a member of the Ministry of Justice's Religious Freedom Commission and, in 2017, he was a member of the Scientific Committee of the International Congress for the Centenary of Fatima «Thinking Fatima: interdisciplinary readings».
