Religion in Portuguese Society
No. 93 APRIL 2019
How are religious identities characterised in Portugal? What has endured and what has been altered with the changes in traditional forms of belief and the emergence of new religious landscapes? Although 80% of the population consider themselves to be Catholic, Portuguese society is moving, at its own pace, towards more religious diversity. Paradoxically, Fátima was decisive for the transformation of traditional religion. This essay does not propose to be an encyclopaedia of religious groups in Portugal. Rather, it invites us to understand the current ways of believing and belonging, based on three axes of observation: a move away from the traditional, individualisation and diversification. It is the portrait of a change – from the religious feeling of the «God of our land» to the religious forms of a globalised world.
