Portugal, a home for everyone

We are the country in Europe with the highest average age at which young people leave their parents' home the latest: not until the age of 34. Simultaneously, the real estate market in Portugal has become a major global discovery. Housing prices in Lisbon are 336% above the national average and in the Porto Metropolitan Area, 191%. Meanwhile, interest rates on loans have risen significantly.

How do Portuguese people fare amid so many difficulties in buying or renting a home?

Renting doesn't seem to be a solution for many Portuguese either. Studying in Porto, Leonor Rodrigues, from Guimarães, pays 350 euros for a room, in poor condition, in an overcrowded house. At present, public student accommodation only caters for 14% of displaced students.

In the rental market, developers say there is no confidence in building at affordable prices and that legislation is unstable. Short-term holiday rentals, on the other hand, have grown, and their impact on the housing shortage is currently being debated. Faced with this tension, how can we guarantee access to housing for all?

Are we making the right decisions to facilitate access to housing? The answers are to be found in this documentary, a co-production between the Foundation and RTP. With live narration by journalist Carlos Daniel.
