When the Schools Closed: Notebooks of the Pandemic
No. 51 FEBRUARY 2021
And one morning, on 16 March 2020, Portuguese schools closed their doors and teachers and students stayed at home. The unprecedented government decision came as a result of the pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 and would only be reversed about two months later, partially, for students who had secondary school exams.
This book records the experience of these weeks by two teachers, their daughter, a Year 11 student, and their cat, also suddenly disturbed by the change in daily life. It is a very personal diary, but it highlights the role of schools as one of the most important anchors of the functioning of society, especially for the families whose day-to-day lives are organised around the school calendar and timetables.
