The Salatinas, Coimbra of Nostalgia

In April 1943, scheduled demolition began in Alta de Coimbra, the original urban settlement of two millennia ago, with a view to implementing the ambitious plan of the Estado Novo for the new University City. Up to the 1960s, the project forced the demolition of building and the eviction of the residents, known as Salatinas.
This portrait tells the story of the forced migration of this community of around two to three thousand people to social housing built outside the city limits. It recreates the loss of the original sense of belonging that led the Salatinas to build new communities based on nostalgia and memory, the revival of old traditions and mutual help: a wound yet to heal.
