A portrait of meal consumption in Portugal

How do the Portuguese eat? Based on recent data on the consumption of meals in the country and the associated domestic practices, this study paints a different picture of the country's eating habits.

The authors reveal the relationships between dining practices, food consumption and the characteristics of society, studying changes in these over the last two decades and comparing Portugal to other countries.

They assess the impact of food on diet, health and food security and make recommendations on how to improve food and nutrition policy in the country. Because the way the Portuguese eat is also a portrait of Portugal.

Through this study, the authors aim to answer questions such as:

  • What are Portugal's meal consumption habits?
  • How much time do we spend on meals, how do we plan and cook them?
  • How much do families spend on food, inside and outside the home?
  • How do demographic and socioeconomic characteristics (gender, age, work, income, household) influence meal consumption and cooking practices and diet quality?
  • How does the national reality compare to that of other countries?
  • What is the impact of meal consumption habits and practices on the diet, health and food safety of the Portuguese?
To the question of how we eat what we eat in Portugal in the 21st century, the most immediate and correct answer would be: we eat out. Not so much because of where we eat our meals, but above all because we eat food that is prepared away from home.
