Portuguese Scientists
No. 36 FEBRUARY 2019
In Portugal, science has developed rapidly and in an unprecedented fashion in recent decades. Today we have more scientific researchers than ever before (and about half are women), whose work has much more impact than ever. But their professional status has declined. Only a small minority of people with PhDs are able to join the staff of a university. For others, life is like being a footballer: they have to be in the right club at all times, few achieve a high degree of recognition and their career could be over before they're 40. This book paints a vivid picture of the people who do scientific research here. What motivates them to stay in the country or leave it? How do they combine passion for science with personal life? This is what we talk about when we refer to Portuguese scientists.
