Portugal in Ruins
No. 2 MAY 2014
Our country has long been a sadly enlightening example of the uncontrolled wrath of anti-heritage. The underground phases of Portuguese history leap from waves of manipulation, carelessness and abandonment of part of its architectural memory, once significant, which is simply left in a state of silent agony, all in the name of a twisted idea of progress. Not only did wars and natural disasters, mega-earthquakes and fires, foreign invasions and the stages of inner disturbances, bad restoration and waves of iconoclasm contribute to this loss of common heritage, but also the unawareness of the guardians, the ambition of unscrupulous speculators, the lack of memory in many communities and the lack of legal instruments for preservation and safeguarding. These little big crimes against heritage tell the story of the examples described here.
