Noise, Lisbon, a City that is never Silent
No. 81 SEPTEMBER 2024
In Lisbon, excessive noise is prohibited by law. Because the harmful effects that inappropriate noise levels have on people’s health and well-being are real, there is consensus on the need to lower the volume of the city. But how? There are more than half a million cars on the streets, air traffic that breaks records year after year, increasingly vibrant nightlife and tourism. Lisbon never seems to calm down.
This portrait analyses the problem of noise in the Portuguese capital from a number of different angles. Using the words of experts and residents and relying on literature, cinema and scientific research, it probes the sources of noise, researches solutions and finds that these must not be just techniques. Finally, it reflects on what we really want: silence or tranquillity?
