Loving the Abyss, a Journey to Buçaco National Forest
No. 62 AUGUST 2022
Completely enclosed, the woods of the Discalced Carmelites, now Buçaco National Forest, still maintain their primordial inaccessibility, based on love of the abyss. After all, these 105 hectares are still protected in the same way that those energetic and pioneering monks were able to enhance the natural characteristics of the mountain when they settled in their Desert or hermitage in 1628.
This book gives access to this forest from an ethnobotany perspective, relating plants and people, from the foundation of the hermitage to the present day, including the troubled period of its desecration in the 19th century. In particular, some of the most emblematic plant species and the inscription in this landscape of an eloquent combination of divine «grace», «nature» and «art».
