To Be Archived, a Journey through the National Archives

No. 37 FEBRUARY 2019

To be archived! The order seems simple and is certainly very common. But in practice, it is the organisation of and access to archived documents – the ""laboratories of history” – that determine their role in understanding our history. Portugal has made significant progress in the field of archives, but researchers and archivists agree that much remains to be done.
Did you know, for example, that adequate treatment of documents filed by the civil service, preserving only the ones that have probative or historical value, would result in savings of five million euros in facilities alone?
In a critical approach, the author of this book begins with an analysis of cases and circumstances, from his own testimony and that of fellow historians and archivists, in order to study the management of the national archival heritage. It tells us that not all is well and explains why.
