He is a retired professor from the University of Porto School of Medicine, devoting himself to teaching and researching in Pharmacology and Therapeutics, as well as Bioethics. He has written more than 500 works, published in national and international journals, published three books and he is co-author of five other works. He is a doctor honoris causa at the University of Coimbra, was awarded the Grand Cross of the Military Order of Saint James of the Sword and a Commander of the Order of the Gregory the Great. He holds the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics.
