The Promised Alentejo
No. 14 FEBRUARY 2016
«The Promised Alentejo» is a familiar road movie. The author tells us a story of the Alentejo through family tales and personal memories. The setting is the Alentejo Litoral region, particularly the municipality of Santiago de Cacém. Amidst cities and villages, the road movie goes around discovering family secrets as it tries to shed a new and relentless light on a region that has been drowning in clichés for decades. There are three themes connecting every kilometre of this trip: women, suicide and the complex nature of people who have been uprooted. The author is a son of the Alentejo who migrated to Greater Lisbon in the 1960s and always assumed that he would find his lost identity on a journey like this through the Alentejo. Was this old dream able to withstand reality?
