Prisons
No. 43 JANUARY 2020
We know that prisons serve to lock up, remove from everyday life, people whose conduct has shown they do not have the right to live in freedom. However, although it is presented as a humane form of punishment, based on discipline and rehabilitation of the individual, the current prison-punishment model raises more and more questions, challenges and problems. There are 49 prisons in Portugal today, with high and medium levels of management complexity, occupied by almost 12,000 people, with the percentage of women in prison being under five per cent. Over the course of two years, the author of this book visited some Portuguese prisons, to compose in this book the description and context of a reality little known, and even overlooked.
What are prisons actually for? What results are measured after a sentence has been served? What are these physical spaces like, what people occupy them and what are their daily lives like? This is a portrait of a small world forcibly enclosed upon itself.
