Portugal and Time

Nº151 SEPTEMBER 2025

Is there a 'Portuguese time', in the chronological sense, described and measured in a way no other people do? Where does our poor relationship with punctuality come from? And the history of our clocks and watches, what does that say about us? Why has much of our national watchmaking heritage disappeared or been left idle today?

This book looks at the Portuguese experience of time in its cultural, sociological, economic and scientific aspects. This is a journey of seven thousand years, from megalithic alignments to atomic clocks, as well as sun dials and mechanical timepieces, including large (clocktower), medium-sized (sitting room, wall, table clocks) and small (pocket watches and wristwatches). The final destination is a country that is chronically lagging behind in its relationship with Chronos and the explanation for this fate of ours.
