Space research carried out in Portugal is at a very acceptable level if you take the size of the country into account. Understanding the reasons for this success may provide some indications of its possible transposition into other sectors of the economy. 17 research institutes whose global scientific production is particularly high and 20 companies that engage in space activity in Portugal are presented. Collaboration between the researcher who will use a certain instrument and the company that builds it can be a driving element of the high-tech industry. Space exploration can also inspire young people to take up studies in the field of science and technology. The decisive role of the Ciência Viva agency in this area is described and the future is imagined, in particular the exploration of Mars.
