Air Quality in Portugal

Nº145 JANUARY 2025

Breathe in. Breathe out. Did you know that you do that 25,000 times a day on average, inhaling 11,000 litres of air? Vital for human life, air also determines the general state of your health. When it is polluted, it is the worst enemy of the environment and ecosystems. This essay identifies the main atmospheric pollutants and suggests how we can deal with them.

In Portugal, despite the clear reduction in air pollution from industrial sources, thousands of premature deaths are recorded every year. These are associated with the existence of high concentrations of pollutants, far higher than recommended, particularly in urban centres and near areas of intensive road traffic. It is urgent that we make the air we breathe cleaner. This essay explains how and why.
