In My Daughter's Name

Nº20 FEVEREIRO 2017

The latest World Health Organisation report revealed the excessive numbers domestic violence has reached worldwide: one in three women is a victim of physical, psychological and sexual assault, simply because she is a woman. The newspaper El País called it «a devastating pandemic», in an article published on 25 November 2016, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Almost a quarter of countries still do not have their own legislation to combat this human tragedy, but this is not the case in Portugal. Particularly since the implementation of the First National Plan against Domestic Violence, launched in 1999 and renewed to date with successive improvements, progress has been made on specific legislation and means of intervention. The most difficult thing is to change mindsets and shape the consciousness of the new generations. The way forward seems to be unquestionable: educate, educate, educate. The report «In My Daughter's Name – Portraits of Violence in Intimacy» is mainly composed of testimonies of women victims of domestic violence. Interviewed in different parts of the country, they agreed to tell their stories anonymously, for understandable reasons. This urgency of sharing corresponded with the desire to contribute to this cause: to fight against a problem that is not «domestic» but rather one of society as a whole. Of all of us, women and men.
