Medieval Town
No. 41 MAY 2019
And behold, the Medieval Town shapes an imaginary of queens and castles, brings the covers of the storybooks read as a child to life, confirms the illustrations in schoolbooks, recalls the lessons of Salazar… Or not. Scattered throughout the country, neglected or transformed into an open-air entertainment programme, between the bells and hoofs of the horses that pull carriages of tourists or ordinary carts and hay, in epicentres of real estate speculation, abandoned or just left as they are, the Portuguese towns of the Middle Ages recall the imaginary and the material, memory and forgetfulness, encounters and losses. This is a portrait of a medieval town that the discourses and experiences of those who live there and who visit it, of those who regulate it or keep records of it, built as heritage. It tells a story interwoven with different voices, but that others always escape from, from the past or yet to come.
