Handwriting emerged at various times and in various places, suggesting that cultures developed this skill independently rather than transmitting it between each other. In other words, writing developed organically over several million years of human cognitive evolution. Nevertheless, handwriting is currently on the verge of disappearing, or at least of becoming an oddity or a museum artefact.
This book seeks to preserve the art of handwriting as part of our human heritage, celebrating it as a means of expressing both identity and emotion. Using digital technology — handwriting’s greatest enemy — we can finally understand how it works and the countless ways it can resist artificiality and embody our humanity.
