Cronyism in Portugal
No. 132 SEPTEMBER 2023
Is cronyism a national epidemic that is increasingly tolerated? According to this essay, the phenomenon has been seen in liberal, republican, fascist and democratic revolutions, two world wars and a cold war. However, despite its historical persistence and wide incidence, it is not something exclusive to the Portuguese nor is it a national inevitability.
Focusing on cronyism in the performance of public duties, this essay also looks at it in the non-public world. It shares scenarios that are prone to it, cataloguing justifications that are associated with it and analysing its effects, particularly the negative ones. Finally, it proposes a counterculture where cronyism is censured, both in public and in private, as a duty of citizenship for all those who wish to build a fairer and more prosperous society.
