Revolution, Counter-Revolution and Democracy, Portugal (1974-1975) from a Comparative Perspective
Two questions remain about the country after 25 of April 1974: why was there no right-wing military coup in Portugal supported by segments of the elite of the previous regime and why didn’t it succumb to the rise of a single-party regime, supported by segments of the armed forces, and gradually marginalise all other parties?
This book answers these two questions, from a comparative study of the 1974-1975 Portuguese revolution and other European revolutionary processes during the 20th century.
This analysis seeks to demonstrate how the predominance of moderate forces in a revolutionary coalition is possible when they have allies in the state, are capable of civic organisation, face radical forces divided among themselves and when military conflicts end with the outbreak of the revolution itself. And it clarifies a broader question: why do revolutions (rarely) give rise to democratic regimes?
