Just by taking a short walk along a beach, you can see that it’s easier to find a piece of plastic than a shell. Plastic waste that ends up in the sea is mostly caused by land activities and only 30% is as a result of marine activities such as fishing or transport.
This book addresses plastic pollution in the ocean, taking into account its diverse origins, how it is transported and how it is distributed in the global ocean, pointing out the reasons that explain the enormous amounts of this material that arrive in the ocean every year.
It highlights its many impacts, both economic and ecological and also on human health, and the concern that exists about creating solutions to prevent and minimise the problem, taking a number of aspects, legislation and policies, science and technology, education and literacy into account. It is an account of several initiatives in Portugal and in the world whose goal is to create a common vision that can unite the different sectors in joint and concerted creation of solutions.
