Parallel Economy
No. 41 JANUARY 2014
The parallel economy is a phenomenon on a global scale, of different sizes and complexity in each period and country due to its economic, social and institutional particularities. Although ordinary citizens interact with this economy in their daily lives, both through their experience and through the media, it is called «parallel», «unobserved» or «unregistered». Underlying this is the fact that it happens outside the scope of the competent authorities and, by incorporating different types of activities, it becomes more difficult to identify and can do more damage to society. Throughout this essay, questions such as: What is the parallel economy? What are the main causes behind it? What consequences does it have? How can this phenomenon be combated? With particular focus on the Portuguese case, this essay intends to reflect on this theme that is often neglected, sometimes misunderstood or even inconvenient.
